Ms. Benya is originally from Northern California but has lived in Ypsilanti for the last 20 years. She spent four years in the US Army as a calibration specialist and had the chance to live in Alabama and Italy during her enlistment. After her honorable discharge, she returned to school and completed her BA in Aquatic Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Immediately after graduation, she left for the Peace Corps and spent two years in the Dominican Republic working on a crocodile monitoring project with the Department of Wildlife. Upon her return, she entered the Peace Corps fellows program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to earn a Master’s in Education while she taught in Detroit. Later she taught in Milan until she came to the ECA in 2008. She returned to school and earned a second Master’s degree from Michigan Tech in Applied Science Education in 2011.
